Equitable Development: Surplus Lands, TOD, and Long-Term Affordability
Now is not the time to drain public resources without a significant public benefit. When local governments auction off surplus land without a long term affordability requirement, they are not only giving up the resource itself but the opportunity to create a permanent supply of affordable housing. In this workshop learn about the tools and templates that can shape policies to preserve surplus land for optimal and equitable development. Just as surplus land is a resource, Transit Oriented Design locations are as well. When housing in the immediate vicinity to TOD’s is not affordable, the chance for equitable development is squandered. Participants will hear the arguments for requiring affordable housing to be included in these golden areas and how to ensure this train will not leave the station without its neighborhoods of all income levels.
