Equitable (Re)development: Gentrification without Displacement

Gentrification is defined as investment in very low-income urban neighborhoods with home improvements and new businesses that attract affluent populations. Investment and improvements sound positive, but the increase in property values and taxes almost always results in displacement of existing residents and the loss of community and cultural identity. This session offers a methodology for identifying neighborhoods likely to experience gentrification utilizing data and tools readily available to local governments and policymakers and offers strategies to facilitate equitable redevelopment that preserves housing affordability and neighborhood culture.
